The Crown Season 6 Part 1 Ending Explained

The new season of The Crown has finally arrived on Netflix, and we couldn't be happier. The popular show has caused a lot of controversy, especially in season five which seemingly exposed the now King Charles about his love affair with Camilla, as well as exposing the royal's treatment towards Diana and how it affected her.
The Crown takes us through historical moments that happened with the British royals, all in modern history. The show began when Queen Elizabeth took the throne and has followed the drama that has occurred in the establishment ever since.
Season 6 is expected to be one of the more dramatic ones, following King Charle's and Princess Diana's divorce, Diana and Dodi Fayed's romance, and of course the devastating death of Dodi and Diana.
We've watched episode one and will summarise everything that happened and explain the ending. Of course, there will be spoilers ahead.

What happened in The Crown Season 6 Episode 1?

Episode One begins with a big foreshadow - a car crash occurs in France. We find out this was, unfortunately, Diana. It then jumps back to Diana who is still alive, she's with William and seems happier than ever - something refreshing to see as we know how unhappy and unwell she was during her issues with Charles.
The episode then follows Diana as she goes on trips with Dodi. A scene between Queen Elizabeth and Charles also reveals that she disapproved of Camilla.
One scene also highlights just how popular and powerful Princess Diana was. She was a beloved figure in British life, aptly being named "The people's princess".
Princess Diana is also shown to pose for paparazzi pictures on Camilla's birthday - showing the slight rivalry that still existed between the two women.
Another scene shows Prince Charles conducting a speech for Camilla. Afterwards, Princess Margaret tries to convince the Queen to approve of Camilla for both the family and public perception.
Another scene shows Prince Charles getting increasingly angry about the negative attention Camilla receives compared to Princess Diana. Again it showcases the jealous side that The Crown touched on last season.
Dodi and Diana's relationship is also causing some issues in Dodi's personal life and is a growing concern for the royals.
These scenes are a big foreshadowing for what is yet to come in the whole of part one such as Dodi and Diana's death, their romance, King Charles and Camilla's relationship, the Queen's struggle to accept Camilla, and also the paparazzi causing issues in the royal's life.
Part One also shows the iconic revenge dress scene - something that has become a historical moment in itself.

The Crown Season 6 Part 1 ending explained

Season 6 Part 1 pretty much follows the lead-up to Diana's death, the royal family dealing with the aftermath of the people's princess' death and the reactions from the British public. With mounting pressure from the public to address the death and deny any wrongdoings.
To understand this episode of The Crown, knowing the real history is essential. Queen Elizabeth was heavily criticised by the British public - many labelling her as heartless and detached. Many even created conspiracy theories about the situation.
Of course, The Crown is a highly dramatised version of the real history - this is clear when Queen Elizabeth is met by Diana's ghost. She says; "For as long as anyone can remember, you’ve taught us what it means to be British. Maybe it’s time to show you’re ready to learn too." This seemingly triggers the Queen into making a speech, in which she addresses Diana's death.
The Crown recreates The Queen's controversial speech, in which she said; "I for one believe that there are lessons to be drawn from her life and the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death. I share in your determination to cherish her memory."
The next scene is perhaps one of the most upsetting ones. It shows Harry and William walking behind their mother's coffin, walking through crowds of people who are in tears. At the end, the Queen is shown to kneel next to her bed and pray. This shows perhaps how upset the Queen was about Diana's death. Charles also is shown to be struggling with Diana's death.
Diana's death was a big shock to the British public and part one ends with a slight glimpse into just how stressful it was.
