There is another reason fans have plenty of reason to remain hopeful. Anna Todd is reportedly developing The Last Sunrise as a trilogy of books. The reported plan is not just to stop with one story but potentially build the world into three movies if the first installment performs well. That gives the studio a ready-made roadmap if it decides that Ry's story is worth continuing on screen.
Maia Reficco certainly isn't hiding the fact that she wants to return. In a recent interview, the actress was asked about the possibility of adapting more of Todd's story and openly said she would love to make a second movie. She even joked that she has been putting pressure on Prime Video during interviews to make it happen. Reficco also spoke warmly about returning to work with Eva Longoria and Fernando Lindez, which makes it clear that the idea isn't something she would simply dismiss.
The ending has left enough room for another chapter. Ry survives her medical crisis, and her relationship with Julián isn't presented as a final goodbye. Instead, the movie ends with the possibility of a future, her health problems haven't magically disappeared, but she has finally stopped living as though every day could be her last. That gives a sequel plenty to explore without having to undo the ending of the first movie.
The books could also provide some clues about where the story might go next.
