Charles Melton, whose role in May December received critical acclaim, took home a Gotham Award and a nomination for the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards previously.
This Tuesday, when the nominees for the upcoming Oscars were listed, it came out that the 33-year-old actor will not be competing for the Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars 2024.

Charles Melton’s role in May December was much appreciated, and the actor received a Gotham Award and nominations for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for his performance.
May December main lead cast included Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, along with Charles Melton.
The film May December told the story of actress Elizabeth, played by Natalie Portman, who goes on to study the life of a 63-year-old woman named Gracie to play her in her upcoming film.
The film's core story is the life of Gracie, who gets into a love scandal for getting into a relationship with a teenager, Joe, played by Charles Melton.
36-year-old Gracie got together with Joe when he was just 13, and that eventually landed her in jail.
However, when she got released from prison, the two got married and eventually had a family together, proving their love.
Melton played the role of Joe in May December, whose part was praised by critics, and the film did well, collecting several accolades.
May December which is inspired by the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau, got released in a few selected theaters in the US in November 2023 and later came to Netflix in December 2023.
The director, Todd Haynes, began working on the script in 2019, and he shared the influence the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau had on the film.
Charles Melton, a former Riverdale star, credited the series with providing him with a safe space for learning and growing while working. He said,
Riverdale truly was my Juilliard—I was learning and growing and playing and taking risks. I was allowed to do that.
Melton played the role of football player Reggie Mantle for seven years during the run of Riverdale and called the series finale "Bittersweet.”.
Reminiscing about his time in Riverdale, the actor said that the series got him some of the best people of his lifetime, saying,
I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days.
