Rumours have been spreading about who Phoebe Bridges is dating
On October 1st 2021, Bo retweeted a tweet by @pitchfork: “Phoebe Bridgers’ take on “That Funny Feeling” will benefit Texas Abortion Funds” Is this a clue? Well, this retweet could be interpreted both ways. It could be a boyfriend showing support for his girlfriend or it could be just one famous friend showing support for his also-famous friend.
On December 12th, 2018, Bo Burnham wrote a piece in the Los Angeles Times titled “Writing ‘Eighth Grade’ as a tribute to young people – and all their uncertainty’ From this article, could we get some more clues as to whether Bo and Phoebe would be good together? Let’s try!
Bo’s project focuses on the less glamorous side of life, specifically, the life of kids. As he writes in the article, he tried to “capture the stutter, mumbly, staccato way that these kids spoke, backpedaled, stumbled.” Michael Tedder in his June 2020 article published on theringer.com about Phoebe Bridges writes that on her album titled “Punisher” Phoebe “continues to observe how profound moments of realization tend to come amid day-to-day routines and the aimless sprawl of life…” In this way, Phoebe and Bo have one thing in common about their respective projects, “Punisher” and “Eighth Grade”. In both, they observe the mundane and find beauty and meaning in the ordinary. As Bo wrote in his LA Times article: “Teens…soliloquizing in their bedrooms…Real kids posting videos that no one was watching – unseen, unprocessed, unadulterated by a built-in audience, desperate to express and define themselves in real time for an audience that may not be there. these vlogs…fascinated me.”
On 20th December 2022, dailymail.co.uk had the headline: “Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham fuel dating rumors after looking ‘flirtatious’ at a comedy show…less than a month after her shock split from Paul Mescal”. Does looking flirtatious hint at a romantic relationship? Well, according to the Cambridge dictionary to flirt is “to behave as if sexually attracted to someone, although not seriously.” If the words “not seriously” are taken into consideration, then perhaps Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham are not romantically involved and just enjoy flirting with each other.
Three weeks later, on January 14th, dailymail.co.uk had the headline: “Phoebe Bridgers gets support from rumored boyfriend Bo Burnham at the airport – days after announcing death of her father.” Does Bo showing support for Phoebe during this difficult time prove that they are dating? Again, this could be interpreted both ways. It could be just a friend showing support for his friend during her grieving or it could be a boyfriend showing support for her girlfriend as she grieves her father.
There are others who have been sleuthing to get to the bottom of whether Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham are dating. On December 20, 2022 Rodlyn-mae Banting wrote on jezebel.com about a podcast that: “…ran through various sightings of the two “making out”, “canoodling”, and “cuddling”…around Los Angeles…” Banting points out that “…making out, canoodling and cuddling isn’t exactly the holy trinity of just-friendship.” However, in this age of different kinds of relationships, including open relationships and polyamory, we cannot say that Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham are romantically involved just because they make out and cuddle. Or can we?
