Here are the highlights of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Season 3, Episode 1.
Raq’s new plan
Raq does not seem okay after the last gun attack that happened to her and her crew. She is worried and has decided to quit the illegal game. She regrets losing Kenya( Jukebox’s mother) in the gun attack that happened because of her. She is also concerned about the safety of her son Kanan; these are the reasons that make her decide not to continue with the dangerous game of the underworld again. But then, it is just the start of the episode, and this decision is just on her mind. The upcoming events can definitely make Raq change her decision.
Kanan’s equation with Raq
Kanan is upset with Raq for hiding the truth about his biological father from him. His trust issues with her got deeper with this revelation, and he is not in the mood to let it go this time. He is visibly upset with this and goes to Famous’s apartment to stay away from Raq. But Raq and Malcolm reach there to assure him that everything is going to be okay and that this secret will not harm him anyway. Kanan seems to be upset with his mother; he also believes that she does not do things well and ends up making things hard for others, like Kenya, who got killed in the attack that happened because of her.
Jukebox and Marvin’s relationship takes a better turn.
After the death of Kenya, Jukebox and Marvin’s relationship becomes better considering the last two seasons. Kenya’s death made Jukebox feel alone, and there are moments where we get to see Jukebox spending time alone with the things that Kenya left for her. Marvin shares some emotional moments with his daughter and hugs her, which clearly shows a positive shift in the father-daughter bond. We also get to see Marvin offer to go to church with Jukebox for Kenya’s memorial.
Is Ronnie’s return going to change things for Unique?
The episode starts with the return of Ronnie, Unique’s older brother, who is visibly unsatisfied with Unique’s current position and status in the mafia world. Ronnie shares a distant relationship with him, as Unique didn’t seem quite happy with his brother’s uncertain return from prison. He criticizes Unique for letting Raq be at the top and not getting her down in the game. Ronnie is shown as intense, and his moves in the first episode suggest he does not like how things are going right now under Unique’s rule. It seems like he’s going to bring in some wild plans in the upcoming episodes that might set the game with Raq again.
How far will Malcolm go to hide his secret?
Malcolm, after discovering that Kanan is his son, is determined to save him from the police at all costs. He makes sure to keep this news a secret, as it is going to be a threat to his job as well. This makes Malcolm go any way to clear his path, which means killing Shannon. Shannon, who is a detective and works with Malcolm, had discovered this secret of Malcolm and had begun digging deeper into this new hole, which did not serve Malcolm well. So, when Malolm decided to meet her privately to clear up things between the two, he ended up shooting the detective in a moment of trigger.
Lou Lou grieves with Kanan.
Throughout the first episode, we get to see Lou Lou drinking and accusing Raq of being self-centered. Apparently, he is accusing her of always doing what she wants and never caring about anyone else. He is also unhappy with the fact that Raq is selling their house. He drinks and grieves his pain with Kanan.
Unique’s on good terms with Raq.
When the episode starts, we get to see Unique kissing and assuring his wife, saying that she need not be worried about their kid’s safety with Ronnie’s return. But at the end of the episode, we also see Unique going to Raq’s house alone and the two getting intimate. It will be interesting to see where this new love, or call it lust, bond between the rivals Raq and Unique takes the series.
With all this happening in the first episode, it sets the stage for the second episode. It will be interesting to follow up on these leads and see where things go from here. Will Raq really quit? What would Malcolm do after killing Detective Burke? And how things change for Kanan. If you are a fan of reading ending explanation of series and getting some spoilers, you'd love these here.
