In that case, the United States could be forced into a public crisis over everything Joe has done in the field.
The team is given a very narrow window to locate Joe before the situation becomes impossible to contain. Kyle and the tactical team move on the Maryland airfield where Joe was being held. They find the Russian personnel involved in her capture and begin working their way through the facility. Kyle eventually gets information about the aircraft that took Joe, but by the time they have what they need, the plane is already gone.
The aircraft has no submitted flight plan, and its tracking system has been disabled. Because it is flying low, conventional tracking becomes extremely difficult. The team realizes that Joe could be heading almost anywhere, and every possible destination creates a different political problem. If the aircraft is located inside American airspace, the U.S. can force it down. If it is discovered outside American-controlled airspace, the response becomes much more complicated.
Kaitlyn and Byron then start considering what options remain if they cannot find Joe quickly. One possibility is to expose part of the Ukrainian operation and sacrifice Aleksi Yurimov as a political offering. That could potentially create room for negotiations, but it would also mean admitting that the United States has been conducting covert activity. The decision is no longer simply about rescuing Joe. The story then moves back to the earlier timeline, where the consequences of the attack on Joe's family are still being felt at home. Neal remains deeply unsettled after what happened to the girls. Cruz and Josephina become part of the operation as the team works to draw information from potential targets. The mission depends on getting close enough to the targets without allowing them to realize they are being investigated.
Elsewhere, Byron and Kaitlyn deal directly with Maxim as they try to work through the intelligence surrounding the Russian network. The operation also brings Amber into the investigation, where she uses her own cover to get close to a Northrop representative who may have information connected to the larger network. Each conversation is designed to uncover another piece of the puzzle without exposing the actual purpose of the operation.
While the CIA works on the larger investigation, Joe's disappearance remains the immediate crisis. Her team continues trying to determine where the Russians have taken her, but every passing hour makes the situation more dangerous. The people searching for her understand that they are not simply looking for a missing operative. They are trying to recover someone who could become an enormous intelligence asset in the hands of an enemy government.
The episode eventually returns to Neal, who is confronted with the reality that Joe may not be coming home anytime soon. Kaitlyn explains that there are several possible outcomes, and none of them are particularly comforting. Joe could be recovered quickly, she could spend months being moved or negotiated over as an intelligence asset, or she could be killed before the United States gets another chance to reach her.
