Outlander: Blood of My Blood returns with a season premiere that wastes little time reminding viewers that reunions in this world rarely come without consequences. After the first season left Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston on the verge of escaping the past, while Brian Fraser and Ellen McKenzie finally found their way to each other, “Remembrance Day” quickly tears apart any hope of an easy happy ending.
The premiere once again moves between the two timelines, following the parents of Claire Fraser and Jamie Fraser as each couple is forced to deal with separation, family pressure and circumstances far beyond their control.
Henry Wakes Up in 1924
The episode opens with Henry in Scotland, but this is not the Scotland he left behind. He has somehow made it back to his own time and is now living in 1924. When he is discovered badly wounded and taken to a hospital, his attempts to explain where he has been only make matters worse.
To the people around him, Henry's story sounds impossible. He talks about traveling through time and the events he experienced in 1715, leaving those treating him convinced that the horrors of war have driven him out of his mind. Henry is eventually placed in an asylum, where doctors attempt to treat what they believe is a severe psychological breakdown.
The truth, however, is far more complicated. Henry knows exactly what happened to him, but there is no way for him to convince anyone that Julia and his child are still trapped in the past.
The story then returns to the events that brought Henry there. At the stones, Henry and Julia were finally preparing to leave when they were discovered by Grant men. A fight breaks out, and Henry is wounded in the shoulder despite the injury, he manages to make it through the stones and return to his own time.
Julia isn't so fortunate, she is caught while carrying the baby, and with Henry suddenly gone, the situation becomes even more dangerous. She is ultimately taken back to Lord Lovat, leaving Henry separated from both his wife and their son.
Back in 1924, Henry receives treatment that only deepens his suffering. Doctors subject him to electroshock therapy in an attempt to deal with what they believe is his damaged state of mind. Instead of helping him move forward, the treatment drags him back into the memories he is desperate to escape.
Henry is forced to relive the horrors of the war and everything he endured, his memories of Julia and his child begin slipping in and out of the trauma, leaving him increasingly disconnected from reality. By the end of his storyline in the premiere, Henry is physically home but emotionally trapped between two worlds, with no idea how he can ever return to the family he left behind.
Ellen Is Forced Back to Her Family
Henry isn't the only one separated from the person he loves. Ellen and Brian's hopes of building a life together also come crashing down.
As the McKenzie men close in, Brian prepares himself for a confrontation. Ellen, however, understands that fighting them head-on could put both Brian and Murtagh in even greater danger. Rather than allowing the men to be caught in a battle they may not survive, she makes the difficult decision to send them away.
Before Brian leaves, he gives Ellen a promise. He intends to return, and within a year, they will be properly married. Ellen then turns herself over to her family and is taken back to the castle. Her return is anything but welcoming. Her brother Colum is furious over what has happened, and Ellen soon learns that her actions have already created consequences for the entire family.
While she was away, the McKenzies moved quickly to strengthen their relationship with the Grants. Dougal was married to Maura Grant in an arrangement neither of them appears to have chosen for themselves. The marriage is largely about maintaining the alliance between their families rather than romance.
Yet the premiere hints that the relationship may become more complicated than either expected. Despite the circumstances surrounding their wedding, Dougal and Maura seem to share an undeniable spark.
Malcolm Grant's Death Changes Everything
The political situation surrounding the families becomes even more uncertain following the death of Malcolm Grant. His absence leaves the Grant clan without the strong leadership that had been driving the conflict forward.
For now, Uncle Mac assumes control, but his priorities are different unlike those who are eager to continue the fight, he isn't convinced that rushing into war is the right decision. It creates a major problem for Dougal he has supported the conflict for some time and remains determined to see the commitment between the families honored.
With the Grants now reconsidering their position, Dougal finds himself caught between family obligations, the growing tension around the alliance and the possibility that the war he expected may not happen as planned.
Julia Plays a Dangerous Game
Julia, meanwhile, remains trapped in a situation where she has very little control over her own future. She knows that escaping Lord Lovat is essential if she is ever going to find her way back to Henry and their original time.
Rather than openly resisting him, Julia begins looking for ways to manipulate the circumstances around her. She encourages Lord Lovat to take the coming battle seriously and, more importantly, pushes him toward leading his men personally rather than allowing Brian to take the position at the front.
Julia encourages Lovat to involve himself directly in the conflict, she hopes to create an opportunity to buy herself more time and eventually find a way out.
Her strategy is risky, but she has little choice with Henry gone through the stones and her child still in her care, Julia has to navigate a dangerous political environment while secretly searching for a path back to the man she loves.
The season premiere therefore leaves all four characters facing different versions of the same problem - they have been separated from the people and lives they desperately want to return to. Henry is trapped in 1924 and losing his grip on the memories of the past, Ellen is back under her family's control, Julia is searching for an escape from Lord Lovat, and Brian has been forced to leave the woman he promised to marry.
