Heartland Season 20 Episode 5 Recap

Heartland Season 20, Episode 5, “Once Bitten.”

Georgie is back at Heartland, but finding a new horse turns out to be harder than she expected. Meanwhile, Lou signs up for an endurance race, Dex faces a major decision about his future in bull riding, and Katie and River find themselves heading into an increasingly uncomfortable situation.

Georgie Returns to Heartland Looking for a New Horse

Georgie's unexpected return brings an emotional storyline to the ranch. Still looking for a horse to replace Phoenix, she turns to Amy for help finding the right partner. Amy arranges for her to try several horses, but none seem to have what Georgie is looking for. Some lack confidence, others do not have enough speed, and none seem to show the enthusiasm and personality that made Phoenix so special.

It soon becomes clear that finding another horse is not simply about choosing one with the right abilities. Georgie wants a connection, and comparing every horse to Phoenix makes the search even more difficult.

Amy eventually decides to approach the problem differently and asks Lisa for help. Lisa introduces Georgie to Sprite, a horse she owns who has plenty of spirit but has not yet managed to prove herself. Georgie is initially hesitant. Although Sprite has the energy she wants, she is not entirely convinced that the horse is the right choice.

Amy encourages her to look beyond what Sprite has achieved so far and consider what the two of them might accomplish together with a little patience and encouragement, Georgie begins to see the potential in the horse. She eventually decides to buy Sprite, giving both of them the opportunity to build a partnership of their own.

Lou Enters an Endurance Race

Lou has another challenge in mind when she decides to enter an endurance race with Stetson. She initially hopes Amy will join her, but Amy is already committed to helping organize and run the event. Lou then approaches Katie, only to discover that she has other plans.

Georgie offers to take part instead, seeing the race as a perfect opportunity to test Sprite. However, once the competition begins, Georgie's excitement about her new horse quickly takes over. Rather than concentrating on following the course, she becomes more interested in seeing what Sprite can do. The pair eventually go off track, leaving Lou frustrated as they fall behind.

The disagreement soon reveals that Georgie's behaviour has little to do with the race itself. When Lou questions what she is doing, Georgie admits that she may be using the competition to deal with her feelings about Katie leaving for school.

Lou begins to understand that Georgie is dealing with more than just the excitement of riding a new horse. The two have to backtrack and find their way onto the proper course, but their conversation gives the race a more personal meaning.

While Lou and Georgie struggle to get back on track, Amy is stationed at one of the halfway points, where riders can stop for water and assistance. She is surprised to find Wynn volunteering there as well. Amy initially assumes Wynn is using the event as another opportunity to promote her brand, but their conversation soon takes a more personal turn.

Wynn reveals that her mother died of cancer and explains that she has a connection to the organization supporting the race because it helped her family during that difficult time. Amy relates to her experience, sharing that she also lost her mother when she was young. However, the discussion takes another turn when Wynn asks Amy about Nathan. She seems interested in seeing a photograph of him, and Amy happily shows her one. Wynn's reaction is not what Amy expects she recognizes Nathan from an event where he was spending time with a female rider who is well known on the rodeo circuit.

Wynn then shows Amy a picture of Nathan with the woman, and the two appear unusually friendly. Amy is caught off guard because Nathan has never mentioned her. He had previously spoken about spending time with someone named Carter at the rodeo events, but had not made it clear that Carter was a woman.

The discovery raises questions about what Nathan has been doing and why he left out such an important detail. It also brings back memories of Ty's past secrecy involving Blair, making the situation even more uncomfortable for Amy.

Before she can properly process what she has seen, Amy receives a call from Lisa, who is waiting at the finish line. Lisa tells her that several riders have already completed the race, but Lou and Georgie have not even reached the halfway point.

Amy Is Bitten by a Rattlesnake

As Amy rides out to look for Lou and Georgie, she notices that Shadow seems uncomfortable and may be having trouble with one of his hooves. At first, she suspects a stone has become lodged in his shoe, but a closer inspection reveals a shadow that has lost an entire horseshoe.

Amy spots the missing shoe in some nearby brush and gets off her horse to retrieve it. What should have been a simple stop quickly turns into a nightmare when a rattlesnake bites her.

The episode leaves Amy in immediate danger, turning what began as an ordinary day helping with an endurance race into a potentially life-threatening emergency.

Dex Faces a Life-Changing Decision About His Eye

Dex's storyline takes another important turn as he continues working on his bull-riding skills with Jack. Their training has been helping him move forward, but an unexpected visitor brings a possible change to his future.

Dex's former hockey manager arrives with news of a medical procedure that could correct the eye problems affecting his ability to ride. Even better, the manager offers to cover the considerable cost of the treatment.

For Dex, the offer presents an opportunity he may not get again. However, he is understandably hesitant about going through with the procedure. Jack is also cautious, especially after looking into the treatment and discovering that it does not guarantee success. In fact, there is a possibility that the surgery could make Dex's condition worse.

Despite Jack's concerns, Dex eventually decides to take the chance. The decision could open the door to a future in bull riding, but it also comes with risks that neither he nor Jack can ignore.

Katie and River Accept an Invitation

Meanwhile, Katie and River are trying to find a sponsor for the Flag Girls. Their search leads them to Chet, the same man who previously made fun of Dex for being too old to ride bulls. Chet is now showing interest in potentially supporting the girls, but his invitation comes with a catch that he wants them to attend a party so they can discuss the arrangement.

Dex immediately warns them that Chet is not someone they should trust. Katie shares his doubts, but River is more optimistic and manages to convince her to go along.

Katie believes they are simply heading to Chet's nearby ranch. However, things take an unexpected turn when they discover that Chet has arranged a limousine to collect them. Instead of taking them to the ranch, they are being driven to his mountain retreat, which is much farther away.

The change of plans makes Katie increasingly uncomfortable. She realizes that they will be far from home, without their own transportation, and potentially unable to leave if the situation becomes unpleasant. Despite her reservations, the two decide to continue with the journey, leaving their evening hanging in uncertainty.
