Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Marshals Season 2, Episode 1, “All Hat No Cattle.”
Marshals returns for Season 2 which began by dealing with the chaos left behind by the first season finale. “All Hat No Cattle” wastes very little time answering the biggest questions surrounding Tom Weaver, Tate’s disappearance and the attack on Cal and Belle. It initially appeared to be a dispute over East Camp quickly becomes something far more dangerous, with Weaver revealing just how far he is willing to go to get what he wants.
For Kayce Dutton, however, none of the conspiracy matters as much as one thing - finding Tate and bringing his son home safely.
Tate Becomes Weaver’s Biggest Bargaining Chip
The Season 1 finale left Tate believing he was heading out on a harmless fishing trip with Weaver. The premiere reveals that there was nothing innocent about the trip.
Kayce soon discovers that Tate has been taken and that Weaver intends to use the boy as leverage. Weaver's attorney, Stan Cobb, makes it clear that the fight over East Camp has entered a completely different phase. Weaver still wants control of the property, but now he has something he believes will force Kayce's hand.
Tate becomes the bargaining chip in Weaver's attempt to get what he wants. Kayce immediately shifts his focus to rescuing his son, whatever professional responsibilities or procedures might normally stand in his way become secondary once Tate's safety is threatened. The Marshal knows that Weaver has crossed a line that cannot simply be negotiated away.
Cal and Belle Survive the Attack
The premiere also reveals what happened to Cal and Belle after the attack at the end of Season 1.
They survived the ambush and soon get another chance to identify the people responsible. After spotting the truck connected to the attackers, Cal and Belle pursue it, eventually forcing the vehicle off the road.
A shootout follows, and the Marshals manage to take down the men involved. More importantly, they recover evidence that begins connecting the attack to the larger operation surrounding East Camp.
Belle discovers a burner phone similar to those connected to the earlier attack on the property. Other phones recovered during the investigation provide even more evidence that the violence surrounding East Camp was carefully organized.
The attack was not an isolated incident, and Weaver's involvement becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
Dolly Is Forced to Choose Between Kayce and Her Father
Dolly finds herself caught in the middle as Kayce moves closer to her father. Her relationship with Kayce had appeared to be developing into something meaningful. After Monica's death, Kayce had slowly begun opening himself up to the possibility of another relationship, and Dolly had become an important part of that process.
But her connection to Kayce becomes much more complicated once the truth about Weaver starts coming out. Dolly initially appears prepared to help Kayce as the situation surrounding Tate becomes more dangerous. She even goes with him as he moves toward confronting her father.
Eventually, however, Dolly is forced to choose where her loyalty lies, she cannot completely turn her back on Weaver.
Her decision becomes one of the most painful developments in the episode because Dolly is not portrayed as someone who fully understood everything her father had been doing. She may have been aware of some of his plans, but she was not secretly responsible for the entire operation.
Instead, her loyalty to her father puts her directly in the path of the conflict between Weaver and Kayce.
Kayce Goes After Tate
The situation finally reaches its breaking point when Kayce heads to Weaver's Wyoming ranch to retrieve Tate. There is no room for a peaceful resolution by this point because Weaver's men are prepared for a confrontation, while Kayce is determined to get his son back.
The standoff quickly turns violent. Kayce and the Marshals clash with Weaver's men as the operation surrounding East Camp begins to unravel. The Marshals eventually gain the upper hand, taking down several of Weaver's people.
Most importantly, Tate is rescued! After unknowingly spending time with the man responsible for targeting his family, Tate is finally brought out of the situation alive. But Weaver manages to escape, setting up the episode's most tragic turn.
Dolly Dies During Weaver's Escape
Weaver attempts to flee with Dolly as everything around him collapses. The escape ends in a devastating crash!
Weaver survives the accident, but Dolly does not; her death is tragic because she was not revealed to be another mastermind behind her father's actions. Instead, she becomes a casualty of the choices she made and the loyalty she maintained toward Weaver.
Andrea later confirms that Dolly did not know the full extent of what her father had been involved in her connection to Weaver was what placed her in danger.
Weaver is devastated when he realizes that his daughter is dead. The man who had been willing to manipulate, threaten and hurt others in his pursuit of East Camp is suddenly left facing the personal cost of everything he has done.
Rather than giving Weaver the death he asks for, Kayce leaves him alive to face what his actions have cost him. Weaver now has to live with the knowledge that his obsession with East Camp and everything he did to obtain it ultimately contributed to his daughter's death.
The Truth About East Camp Becomes Clear
As the dust settles, it becomes increasingly obvious that Weaver's interest in East Camp was never simply about expanding his ranch.
The attacks, the criminal activity and Tate's kidnapping all point toward a much larger operation surrounding the property. For Kayce, that changes the significance of East Camp yet again.
He had already spent much of the previous season questioning whether holding onto the land was worth the constant danger and conflict. But Weaver's actions have now made the stakes personal.
Someone was willing to kidnap his son in an attempt to force him to give up the property. Kayce is therefore unlikely to view selling East Camp as an easy solution anymore.
What Happens Next for Kayce?
By the end of “All Hat No Cattle,” several of the major cliffhangers from Season 1 have been resolved.
Tate is safe, Cal and Belle survive their attack, Weaver's operation has been exposed, although he remains alive, and Dolly's death leaves Kayce with another painful loss to deal with.
The episode also changes the situation between Kayce and Dolly permanently. It looked like a possible new beginning for Kayce ends in tragedy because Dolly ultimately could not abandon her father.
At the same time, the conflict over East Camp is far from finished. Weaver's plans may have collapsed, but the reasons behind the criminal operation surrounding the property have not disappeared.
Season 2 therefore begins with Kayce having accomplished the most immediate goal -bringing Tate home - but the victory comes at a heavy cost. Weaver is still alive, East Camp remains important, and Kayce is left to deal with the consequences of everything that happened.
