Episode 3 showed how deeply divided Big Daddy's family has become over Lamar's future, while James was finally promised a place in the family business after feeling pushed aside. The biggest emotional theory may come from Gerty and Big Daddy's past is their resistance to Lamar's music has never been simply about disliking his ambitions. There is clearly something deeper behind their fear, particularly given what happened to Lamar's mother and the way the family has reacted whenever music enters the conversation. James trying to get through to them could force those old wounds back into the open and reveal more about why they are so determined to keep Lamar away from the industry.
Leon may also find himself pulled further into the situation despite trying to build a life away from the streets. The official series description establishes that he is pursuing his own path through a legal clinic while Wanda becomes increasingly involved in the music business, but their worlds continue to overlap. If the record starts creating bigger problems, Leon could once again be forced to deal with the consequences of Wanda's choices, especially if street politics become attached to the growing music operation.
Ultimately, Episode 4 looks set to be the point where the dream starts becoming a real business and that could make everything much more dangerous. Lamar's music is no longer just something he creates in a studio with his friends. There is now a label, money, family pressure, street connections and an artist being chased by police all tied to the same opportunity.
