The Testaments Episode 8 Recap: Hulda Reveals Doctor Grove’s Secret

Episode 8 of The Testaments opens with Agnes being given a broken ceramic plate as part of her engagement preparations. She is instructed to carefully repair every shattered piece before her wedding ceremony. While working on it, she remains quiet and distant, clearly overwhelmed by the reality of what is happening around her. At the same time, rumors about the girls’ upcoming marriages continue spreading through the dormitories.

Agnes soon learns that Becka is officially set to marry Garth. The news unsettles her immediately, especially after hearing other girls gossip about how close Becka and Garth have become. Agnes struggles to hide her emotions, particularly during conversations with Becka, who appears excited about her engagement. Aunt Lydia later confirms all the matches publicly, announcing that Agnes will marry Commander Weston while Becka will marry Garth. The announcement changes the atmosphere among the girls, creating tension between Agnes and Becka almost instantly.

Elsewhere, the younger girls are gathered for a marriage preparation lesson led by Aunt Vidala. During the class, diagrams are drawn on the board while the girls are instructed on how wives are expected to behave with their husbands after marriage. Daisy and Shunammite are excluded from participating and sent outside together instead. While sitting alone, Daisy worries about Talia, the Pearl Girl who disappeared after being taken by the Eyes.

The conversation is interrupted when Daisy realizes she has gotten her period. Panic immediately sets in because she knows becoming eligible for marriage would permanently trap her inside Gilead. Shunammite quickly notices something is wrong, forcing Daisy to explain the situation. Shunammite confesses her own fears about being unable to have children one day and disappointing her family. Daisy attempts to reassure her while also trying to stop her from revealing the truth to anyone else.

As they continue talking, Daisy offers to explain sex and pregnancy properly since Shunammite admits she barely understands anything discussed in the lessons. Shunammite listens with confusion and disbelief while Daisy awkwardly explains how reproduction actually works outside Gilead’s rigid teachings.

Meanwhile, Hulda secretly approaches Agnes and confesses that Doctor Grove assaulted her. Hulda breaks down emotionally while explaining what happened, blaming herself and insisting she must have done something wrong. Agnes listens carefully but does not immediately reveal that she experienced the same abuse herself. Instead, she encourages Hulda to report the incident to the Aunts.

Later, Hulda and Agnes are summoned to speak with Aunt Vidala. During the meeting, Hulda nervously repeats her accusation against Doctor Grove. Aunt Vidala immediately dismisses the claim and pressures Hulda into believing she misunderstood the situation. She warns both girls not to speak about it again; Agnes stays silent throughout most of the meeting and eventually agrees not to mention it further.

Afterward, Agnes privately visits Aunt Lydia. Without directly explaining everything, she makes it clear that Hulda was telling the truth about Doctor Grove. Aunt Lydia carefully listens and questions Agnes about how she knows this information. Agnes quietly implies that she has personal knowledge of his behavior. Lydia advises her to remain patient and avoid creating trouble before her marriage.

Preparations continue for Becka and Garth’s engagement celebration later that evening. Several girls attend the gathering, including Agnes, Daisy, Shunammite, and Penny. Penny arrives looking exhausted and withdrawn, drawing concerned looks from the others. Inside the house, the girls mingle while families exchange formal congratulations.

During the party, several guests quietly gossip about Garth’s father, who uses a wheelchair following an earlier poisoning attack. Daisy later slips outside and speaks with him privately. He explains that Mayday was responsible for the attack that left him disabled. Garth later joins the conversation and defends his father, insisting he is still the bravest man he knows despite everything that happened.

Daisy also tries speaking to Garth about her situation and asks for help keeping her period secret. Garth appears confused by some of the things she tells him and admits he does not fully understand what she needs. He also makes it clear that she cannot leave Gilead yet because Mayday still expects her to remain there until their mission is complete.

Back inside the party, Agnes forces herself to congratulate Becka and Garth despite her discomfort. The conversation between the girls remains tense, especially after Becka enthusiastically talks about her future marriage.

Later that night, Agnes secretly approaches Daisy and hands her supplies to help hide her period. Daisy is surprised by the gesture and thanks her quietly; during their conversation, Agnes also reveals the truth about Doctor Grove and confirms that Hulda’s accusation was real. Daisy listens carefully as Agnes explains what happened before the episode comes to an end.
