Episode 2 of The Way Home season 4, “Blinded by the Light,” follows Kat and Alice as they are pulled into two separate timelines, each revealing pieces of a larger story tied to Lingermore and the families connected to it.
Kat arrives in the 1920s with the intention of finding any trace of Tessa, but her search is interrupted when she encounters Fern; their first interaction leads Fern to give Kat the nickname “Kitty Kat” after seeing her emerge from the pond dishevelled. Fern does not question Kat’s sudden appearance or origins, instead accepting it without pressing for answers, suggesting she understands the nature of the pond and its limitations. Kat is drawn into Fern’s world, accompanying her to a lavish gathering hosted by Grayson Goodwin, a man with ambitions of bringing film production to Port Haven.
At the party, Kat observes Fern’s close relationship with Grayson, who presents a vision of a glamorous future and proposes marriage to her. Fern accepts, during the same event, Kat notices Grayson engaging in suspicious dealings with men linked to the illegal alcohol trade, raising doubts about his character. The situation escalates when Clifton Kane, the town’s temperance officer, arrives and shuts down the party due to the presence of illegal liquor. This introduces tension between Grayson’s operations and Clifton’s authority.
Clifton later crosses paths with Fern at the newspaper office, where she works on the society pages; their interaction establishes a connection between them, complicated by his opposition to the kind of activities Grayson is involved in. Because of circumstances set in motion by Kat, Clifton ends up staying at the Landry farm, placing him in closer proximity to Fern.
During her time in the 1920s, Kat also learns more about Lingermore’s underground tunnels. There are accounts of five men entering the tunnels, but only four returned, suggesting that something significant happened there - the tunnels are described as a place where time feels suspended. Before leaving, Kat asks Fern to inquire about Tessa Augustine. While the name does not seem familiar, Fern reacts differently when Kat mentions Tessa Cooper, indicating she may know more than she reveals.
In the present timeline, Kat later asks Del about Fern’s children and their father; Del explains that the identity was never clearly known. Kat connects this to a story Fern once told about a sailor, which resembles a film concept Grayson had been developing, raising questions about whether Fern withheld the truth about the father’s identity.
Meanwhile, Alice is sent to the 1970s without initially understanding the reason; she briefly encounters an older Fern, who reminds her that the pond’s actions always have a purpose. Alice then reunites with Evelyn Goodwin, whom she has not seen in two years. Evelyn is now married to Ashley, and their dynamic has changed since Alice last saw her. Alice also reconnects with Colton Landry, and the three spend time together, though their relationships show signs of strain.
Tension emerges when Colton expresses distrust toward a man Evelyn is associating with, describing him as insincere. Evelyn does not fully deny this, but reveals a more pressing situation - she is pregnant. Alice remains with her during this moment, offering reassurance as Evelyn processes what this means for her future.
Alice also spends time with Colton, during which he encourages her to perform her own music rather than relying on songs written by others. When she hesitates, he points out that the material she is using does not reflect her true feelings, prompting her to confront what she has been avoiding.
As Alice’s time in the 1970s continues, Griffin Landry arrives in Port Haven on a motorcycle, placing him in the same period and linking him to earlier hints about Elliott’s family history; this ties into ongoing questions about Tessa and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Back in the present, Del finally shares more information with Elliott about his past. She admits that while she does not know exactly what happened to his mother, she does know who was responsible for taking her. A flashback shows Del and Colton discussing Tessa, with Del suggesting there was more to her leaving than what was believed, while Colton acknowledges uncertainty about the full truth.
The episode closes with both timelines pointing toward Lingermore and its tunnels as a central location tied to unresolved events, with Kat and Alice each uncovering details that connect past actions to present-day questions.
