The Way Home Season 4 Episode 3 Recap

Episode 3, “Dust in the Wind,” continues to trace the mystery of Tessa’s disappearance, but instead of clear answers, the episode reveals fragments of her life across different timelines. In the present, Elliott struggles with what he’s learning about his mother. The possibility that she may have left intentionally, possibly for someone else, begins to take shape, especially after Del shares her long-held suspicion that Tessa and Griffin may have been involved and could have left together. It unsettles Elliott, who reacts strongly, directing his frustration toward Del despite her support over the years.

In the past, Alice travels back in time and finds herself in 1978, where she comes face-to-face with Tessa, who is working as a waitress at Coyle’s. Tessa appears to recognise something in Alice, subtly hinting at a deeper awareness; she was also seen taking money from the till and asking Alice to stay quiet about it. Around the same timeline, Griffin is introduced and appears to be aware of the pond and its purpose, especially after noticing Alice heading toward it, suggesting he may also be connected to time travel.

Back in the present, Vic returns to Port Haven after his honeymoon and seeks out both Del and Elliott. His conversation with Elliott opens up parts of the past, including his belief that Tessa did love their son. He also mentions receiving a letter that implied Tessa’s time was coming to an end, along with the return of a family ring. However, the origin of the letter remains uncertain. A small but significant detail emerges when Elliott notices the clock chiming at 11:11, a time Vic says held importance for Tessa.

Alice’s storyline focuses on the consequences of time travel. After a brief visit to 1976, she jumps again, expecting continuity, but instead lands two years later; she realises she has missed a major part of Evelyn’s life, including the birth of her child, Louis. This gap makes it difficult for Alice to maintain her place in their lives; she understands that returning repeatedly with long absences and no visible aging would raise questions she cannot answer. As a result, she shares a quiet goodbye with Evelyn and Cole, marking the end of that connection.

In her present-day life, Alice grows closer to Noah and Max. However, this dynamic begins to shift when Noah reveals plans to move away to open a restaurant several hours from Port Haven. It changes the group’s dynamics and brings Alice and Max closer together. A moment by the pond leads to an almost-kiss after Max playfully pushes Alice toward the water, though she does not time travel this time.

Kat, meanwhile, attempts to step back from time traveling but ultimately returns to the pond in search of more answers. She lands in the 1920s during a prohibition-era gathering at a speakeasy alongside Fern, while there, Kat overhears the Augustine boys discussing plans that suggest someone may be targeted. Concerned, she warns Fern, but events take a sudden turn when Fern spikes Kat’s drink. Kat loses consciousness just as a raid led by officer Kane begins. She later wakes up in jail, confused about Fern’s actions and the situation that led her there.

Throughout the episode, Fern is shown to have unusual knowledge that does not fully align with her time period. Kat notices a bracelet that connects Fern to Tessa, raising questions about their relationship. Additional details, including Fern performing a song that originates from a later era, further suggest a link to the future; these moments suggest that Fern may be aware of time travel or have connections to individuals who are.

The episode also ties together smaller clues, including a bullet casing previously found by Alice and historical references to Grayson Goodwin, suggesting a possible connection between past violence and present-day discoveries. These elements remain unresolved but continue to shape the larger narrative surrounding Tessa, Griffin, and the timelines they may have traversed.

In the final moments, Elliott and Kat have a conversation about their future; Elliott expresses his desire to have children, which catches Kat off guard. Rather than giving a definitive answer, she asks to revisit the conversation later, leaving the discussion open as both continue to deal with the uncertainties surrounding them.
