The X-Men ’97 Season 2 finale brings the long-running Apocalypse storyline to its breaking point, with Gambit at the crux the conflict. After his resurrection, Remy LeBeau has remained tied to Apocalypse’s influence, leaving the X-Men divided over whether he can truly be saved. Even after Professor X and Rogue manage to pull Gambit’s consciousness away from Apocalypse, X-Force and X-Factor continue to believe he is still dangerous.
The tension finally explodes at X-Corp headquarters. Cable and Val Cooper lead X-Force and X-Factor in an assault against the X-Men, with the attack backed by a SHIELD helicarrier and Sentinel Squad ONE. The building quickly turns into a battlefield as mutants from both sides clash, each group convinced that they are fighting to prevent a larger catastrophe.
Away from the main fight, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler travel to Apocalypse’s Ship to find a way to deal with the threat once and for all. Their search leads them to the Celestial Shrine, the ancient structure connected to En Sabah Nur’s transformation into Apocalypse. Rogue realizes that the only way to gain enough power to protect Gambit and the others may be to enter the shrine herself.
Inside, Rogue comes face-to-face with Eson the Searcher. She makes it clear that she is willing to risk everything to save Gambit and stop Apocalypse. Eson responds by granting her Celestial power, but the gift comes with a condition. Rogue must eventually repay the debt with her own life, meaning the power she receives could ultimately cost her everything.
Meanwhile, the fighting at X-Corp grows more dangerous as Cable finally reaches Gambit. Convinced that Gambit remains a threat, Cable shoots him. The attack leaves the other X-Men horrified, but Gambit's death does not destroy Apocalypse's hold on him. Instead, it gives Apocalypse the opening he needs to take complete control of Gambit's body.
Gambit is transformed into a terrifying physical manifestation of Apocalypse, combining Remy's body with the ancient mutant's overwhelming power. The threat now fully unleashed, Rogue returns from the Celestial Shrine in her new form and confronts him. She wastes no time battling him. Using the power Eson gave her, Rogue separates Apocalypse's essence from Gambit's body and contains it within a gem.
Once Apocalypse is removed, Rogue gives the gem to Cable so the threat can be secured. Gambit is finally freed from Apocalypse's control, bringing the season's central conflict to an end. But Rogue's victory comes with a price that she can no longer escape.
Because Rogue had promised Eson that the Celestial debt would be repaid, she is expected to sacrifice herself. Nightcrawler refuses to let his sister make that choice alone. Kurt steps forward and returns to Eson in Rogue's place, choosing to give his own life so that Rogue and the rest of the X-Men can live.
The finale then moves into a series of moments showing the consequences of Kurt's sacrifice. The surviving X-Men continue their lives, but his absence hangs over everything they do. His decision gives the team a chance to move forward, even though they have lost one of their closest family members.
The episode closes with another major development that could have serious consequences for the X-Men going forward. Val Cooper appears to have been shot by Mystique, leaving her fate uncertain. At the same time, Graydon Creed has risen to the position of American president, creating a dangerous political situation for mutants and setting the stage for another conflict in the future.
