House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3 Recap: A Costly Deception Shakes the Iron Throne

The victory that placed Rhaenyra Targaryen on the Iron Throne has done little to bring peace. After the bloodshed that reshaped the war and the capture of King’s Landing. While she struggles to establish control over a divided kingdom, Daemon Targaryen is leading events elsewhere with an approach that surprises even those who know him best.

Facing Lord Ormund Hightower and his army, Daemon chooses intimidation over destruction with Caraxes circling overhead and the immense presence of Silverwing and Vermithor backing him, he gives Ormund only one real choice. Rather than watching his soldiers burn, Ormund agrees to surrender. Daemon accepts the submission but demands one final price before allowing the Hightower forces to withdraw. Young Daeron Targaryen, raised under Hightower protection, must be handed over as a hostage. Although the demand leaves Ormund visibly bitter, he has no option but to comply. As Daeron is escorted away, Tessarion remains behind, watching helplessly as her rider disappears.

Back at the Red Keep, Rhaenyra is still adjusting to the reality of occupying the throne her father intended for her. Daemon admits that his original plan had been to destroy the Hightower army completely, but Rhaenyra had forbidden it. She insists that her reign cannot begin with unnecessary slaughter, believing she must rule in a manner that honors King Viserys' vision of peace instead of feeding an endless cycle of revenge.

Soon afterward, Rhaenyra comes face to face with Daeron for the first time. Held as a prisoner within the castle, Daeron offers no words, while Rhaenyra studies the younger half-brother she has barely known. Daemon wastes no time reminding her that Daeron still possesses a claim to the throne, making his continued existence a danger to her own rule. His blunt advice is that such threats are usually eliminated, not imprisoned.

Before Rhaenyra can decide what to do with Daeron, another crisis lands before her, she learns that the royal treasury has vanished. Tyland Lannister, believed dead after the Battle of the Gullet, appears to have removed nearly every coin before abandoning the city. With barely enough money to sustain the crown for another week, the new queen discovers that the kingdom she has inherited is close to financial collapse. The only man who might have known where the missing fortune was hidden has already been executed, leaving everyone searching for answers that may never come.

As the days pass, Rhaenyra realizes that wearing the crown means dealing with problems far smaller than dragons and battlefields. Advisors interrupt her constantly with questions about palace repairs, rat infestations, royal chambers, ceremonies, and countless daily matters that demand immediate attention. While she attempts to manage the endless responsibilities, her thoughts remain fixed on the missing King Aegon. Alicent Hightower insists she has no knowledge of his whereabouts and suggests declaring him dead since his injuries left him barely recognizable and dragonless. Rhaenyra considers the proposal and approaches the High Septon, hoping to settle the matter officially. However, the religious leader refuses to acknowledge Aegon's death without seeing undeniable proof of his body.

Elsewhere, Lord Corlys Velaryon seeks recognition for Addam and Alyn, revealing openly that both young men are his sons born outside marriage. After everything they have done in service of her cause, he asks the queen to legitimize them but Rhaenyra refuses. She understands that publicly legitimizing them could reopen painful questions about the legitimacy of her own children, something her enemies have exploited for years. Corlys leaves disappointed, feeling his loyalty has not been rewarded.

Just before hearing petitions from the people of King's Landing, Rhaenyra experiences another reminder that even queens cannot escape ordinary human realities. She composes herself and enters the throne room to listen as the smallfolk describe shortages, hunger, and suffering caused by noble families hoarding supplies during the war. Rather than answering immediately, she invites the wealthiest merchants and influential nobles to what appears to be a lavish feast; their confidence quickly fades when roasted rats are placed before them instead of expensive dishes. With the room silenced, Rhaenyra announces that their hidden food stores will be seized and distributed among the starving people of the city. The unexpected move leaves many shocked, though at least one lord quietly admires the cleverness of her strategy as she departs.

Daemon remains unconvinced that winning over hungry citizens deserves so much attention. His ambitions extend far beyond King's Landing; with six dragons under their control, he argues that no force in Westeros could hope to oppose them and believes they should use that overwhelming advantage to expand their dominance. Rhaenyra refuses to be distracted by dreams of conquest while her own kingdom remains unstable. Instead, she orders Daemon to travel to the Vale and collect the tribute promised by Lady Jane Arryn.

After personally overseeing the distribution of food throughout the streets, Rhaenyra reaches a decision regarding Daeron's future. Rather than executing him, she chooses exile. He will be sent to the Wall to take the vows of the Night's Watch, ending his claim without spilling more Targaryen blood. Before carrying out the sentence, she allows Alicent to see the young prisoner. During their reunion, Rhaenyra notices something in Alicent's reaction that immediately raises suspicion. It becomes clear that the youth delivered by Lord Ormund is not Daeron at all but an impostor sent to deceive her.

Before the it can even be fully processed, another alarming report arrives. A dragonkeeper informs the queen that Hightower soldiers have recovered Tessarion and successfully retaken Tumbleton. The fragile sense of control Rhaenyra had been building begins to unravel once more. As flames consume what remains of Hightower influence in the distance, she is left standing at the heart of a kingdom that is far from secure, realizing that claiming the Iron Throne was only the beginning of a far more difficult battle.
