The sixth episode opens with an unexpected death before the battle has a chance to begin. Ser Criston Cole finally meets the end he has seemed to welcome for so long, but it comes without glory or heroics. Before swords can clash, arrows strike him down, leaving him to die on the battlefield. His final moments are quiet as he clutches Alicent's handkerchief, a reminder that despite everything he had become, his feelings for her never truly faded. The death that he had spent so much time chasing arrives suddenly, ending his journey before he can lead another charge.
Elsewhere, Gwayne Hightower reaches Tumbleton after distancing himself from Cole. He soon discovers that Ormund Hightower is no easier to serve. Ormund speaks constantly about victory and power while leaving much of the danger to those beneath him. Behind his confident appearance is a man who values comfort as much as conquest, expecting everyone else to carry the burden of war while he enjoys the rewards.
Away from Ormund's watchful eye, Daeron opens up to his uncle. After spending most of the season quietly following orders, he finally admits that living under Ormund's influence has changed him in ways he dislikes. He confesses that he hates the person he becomes around him and makes it clear that ruling has never been his ambition. The conversation paints Daeron as someone who understands the cost of power far better than many around him. Although others celebrate him as "Daeron the Daring," he appears far more cautious than the title suggests.
At the same time, Daemon Targaryen slips into enemy territory disguised as one of the City Watch; his secret mission allows him to observe Ormund's fighters up close, confirming that the rebellion is stronger and more organized than expected. While others rely on reports, Daemon chooses to witness the threat for himself, proving once again that he prefers direct action over waiting for events to unfold.
Back in King's Landing, Rhaenyra receives representatives claiming to speak for House Baratheon; their arrival immediately disappoints her because Lord Borros himself refuses to appear. The visitors later travel to Tumbleton under the guise of pledging loyalty to Daeron, but their true purpose is far more dangerous. Hidden among them are assassins sent to eliminate both Ormund and Daeron before the rebellion can grow stronger.
The assassination attempt quickly falls apart. Gwayne notices suspicious behavior before the killers can finish their task, exposing the deception. Chaos erupts inside the camp as soldiers move to protect their leaders. Ormund survives despite offering little resistance during the attack, while the infiltrators are swiftly cut down. Instead of creating division within the Hightower ranks, the failed mission strengthens the bond between Ormund and Gwayne. The experience even softens Ormund's attitude toward his cousin, leading to an unexpected apology and an offer allowing Gwayne to return home if he wishes.
The failure only reinforces Daemon's belief that decisive action would have produced a better result. Earlier, he had volunteered to personally remove Ormund and Daeron from the board, but Rhaenyra rejected the idea in favor of a more careful strategy. Once again, it was a disappointment instead of victory. During a tense Small Council meeting, Daemon also silences Lord Manderly after mocking remarks about dragons, reminding everyone in the room that some men know more about feasting than fighting.
Life is becoming increasingly difficult for Rhaenyra's new dragonriders. Ulf grows restless after being confined inside the Red Keep with little freedom despite now riding a dragon. He longs for recognition and cannot understand why possessing such power means hiding from the world. Hugh struggles in a different way. After secretly returning to see his wife, he is met with anger rather than comfort. She cannot forgive him for leaving his family behind in pursuit of a dragon. Both men appear exhausted by the burden that came with the honor they once desired.
Inside the Red Keep, Rhaenyra turns her attention back to Alicent after learning about the failed escape attempt. Publicly ignoring the incident would weaken her authority, but she hesitates to impose severe punishment. Instead, Alicent and Helaena lose what little freedom they still had. During the confrontation, Rhaenyra also discovers that Helaena is pregnant. When she later discusses the matter with Mysaria, the mistress of whispers pretends she knew nothing about it, carefully hiding whatever plans she may already have in motion.
Helaena herself continues to withdraw from the world around her. She refuses food, spends her days working quietly on her embroidery, and creates another mysterious vision through her needlework. Alicent recognizes that the images point toward Aemond's whereabouts at Harrenhal and finally accepts that her daughter's strange visions hold real meaning. Faced with another impossible choice, Alicent decides to protect Helaena and her unborn grandchild above all else.
She secretly approaches Rhaenyra with an offer. Believing Aemond remains at Harrenhal, Alicent proposes a plan to capture him before he can escape. Rather than sending an army that would only drive him away, she suggests using someone he trusts to lure him into a trap. For the first time, Rhaenyra openly accepts that Helaena possesses prophetic abilities, and the queen quietly begins preparing for the risky mission.
Unaware that his mother is working against him, Aemond prepares to leave Harrenhal after recovering from his injuries. Alys Rivers tries to delay his departure, revealing a hidden cache of dragon eggs left behind generations earlier. She speaks of restoring Targaryen power at Harrenhal and imagines a future where they rule together. Her words appear to reach Aemond, and the conversation ends with the two sharing a kiss, suggesting that an alliance between them may now be taking shape.
Elsewhere, several smaller storylines continue moving forward. Lady Jeyne Arryn admits that she allowed Rhaena to remain hidden within the caves near the Eyrie, but she quickly reminds the young princess that her survival must remain secret. Baela grows closer to Alyn despite the tension that had previously existed between her and Addam. Across the Narrow Sea, Aegon finally accepts that remaining in Westeros offers him little hope and decides that fleeing to Essos may be his only path forward.
Rhaenyra's own struggles continue inside the Red Keep. She becomes increasingly overwhelmed by the endless demands of ruling while also finding it difficult to reconnect with her son, Joffrey. Her growing uncertainty reaches a symbolic moment when the Iron Throne cuts her. The injury serves as another troubling sign while doubts continue to surround her ability to lead during such a dangerous time.
The episode closes with yet another devastating setback. Alyn travels to Driftmark hoping to convince Corlys Velaryon to send his fleet and soldiers to reinforce King's Landing. Corlys remains bitter over Rhaenyra's refusal to acknowledge his illegitimate sons, but Alyn reminds him that he once made the same mistake himself. Those words finally break through Corlys' anger, and he agrees to support the queen. Before the Velaryon forces can leave, however, Ormund launches a surprise attack. The Velaryon army is overwhelmed, and Corlys, the legendary Sea Snake, is captured, handing Rhaenyra yet another painful defeat as the season races toward its final chapters.
