Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5 Episode 1 Recap

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5 begins with Kanan arriving at Raq's house, determined to confront his mother. The situation quickly turns deadly when he hears someone approaching in the dark. Acting on instinct, Kanan fires his weapon and moments later, he discovers that the person he shot is Lulu.

It leaves Kanan stunned. Lulu collapses from the gunshot wound, and despite the urgency of the moment, it becomes clear that there is nothing that can be done. Raq arrives and finds both Kanan and Lulu at the scene; faced with the devastating reality of what has happened, she immediately takes control of the situation.

Rather than alerting authorities, Raq begins covering up the incident. She focuses on protecting her son and removing any evidence that could connect him to the shooting. During the cleanup, another man connected to the situation is also eliminated, ensuring there are no witnesses left behind. By the end of the night, Lulu's body is moved, and the truth about his death remains known only to Raq and Kanan.

As news of Lulu's death spreads, members of the Thomas family struggle to process the loss. Marvin is devastated by the death of his younger brother. While trying to understand what happened, he becomes increasingly frustrated by the lack of answers surrounding the shooting. Raq keeps her involvement hidden and says nothing about Kanan's role in the tragedy.

Preparations for Lulu's funeral bring the family together, but grief hangs over every interaction. During the service, Marvin openly expresses his anger toward whoever is responsible for Lulu's death. Unaware of the truth, he vows not to let the matter go unresolved. Throughout the funeral, Raq and Kanan attempt to maintain normal appearances while carrying the burden of their secret.

Jukebox attends the funeral and begins paying close attention to the behavior of both Raq and Kanan. She notices tension between them and quietly observes their interactions. Earlier, Jukebox had contacted Lulu on the night of the shooting, hoping he would check on Raq because she knew Kanan was headed there. After never hearing back from him, questions remain in her mind.

Elsewhere, Unique continues moving forward after the events of the previous season. He tracks down Perissa and meets with her; their conversation centers on the danger surrounding them, and Perissa makes it clear that she wants distance from the violence that continues to follow Unique. Afterward, she leaves, choosing her own path.

Unique also spends time with Breeze, whose presence begins to have a larger impact on the streets. The two men discuss business and future opportunities; their partnership starts taking shape as they work together while navigating the shifting balance of power around them.

At the same time, Stefano is shown recovering from the attack against him. Despite his condition, he remains focused on retaliation. Conversations within his organization revolve around responding to Phil Russo and settling unfinished business. The conflict between the two sides remains active as both groups prepare for what comes next.

Detective Garcia continues his investigation and starts applying pressure in different areas. His attention eventually turns toward Jukebox, leading to tense exchanges between them as he attempts to gather information.

By the end of the episode, Lulu's funeral has concluded, but the truth behind his death remains hidden. Raq and Kanan continue carrying the secret, Marvin mourns his brother while searching for answers, Jukebox grows increasingly suspicious, and the various players across New York continue positioning themselves as new alliances and rivalries begin to emerge.
