Lioness Season 3 Episode 5 pushes Joe and her team deeper into the investigation that began before their leader was abducted. They uncover a far bigger than a handful of foreign spies operating inside the United States. The CIA starts seeing a disturbing pattern of outside influence reaching into American institutions, including education, politics, and other powerful sectors. With information provided by Oleksandra Balakin, the Russian spy who turned into a Ukrainian asset, the Lionesses begin using the same methods their enemies have been using against them.
Joe’s team sets several traps to identify people working for foreign interests. Two Cups is sent undercover as a defense contractor trying to make connections at a strip club that has become a recruiting ground for potential assets. At the same time, Cruz and Josephina target a high-ranking engineer named Cade, who has already been recruited by an outside handler.
Two Cups manages to get close to a sex worker who is secretly recording their encounter, creating potential blackmail material. But when the handlers arrive the following morning, they walk straight into a CIA operation. Instead of finding an easy target, they are surrounded and arrested.
Cruz and Josephina have a similar success with Cade. After bringing him back to his hotel room, the team reveals that he has been caught. Joe and the others confront him and force him to explain how he became involved and who has been controlling him. His information gives the CIA something far more valuable than a single arrest. It allows them to identify the person behind the operation and prepare an ambush.
Their target turns out to be another software engineer known as Rooster, who has been acting as Cade’s handler. By the end of the operation, both Cade and Rooster are in custody, giving Joe’s team two potential sources of intelligence.
The interrogation that follows becomes another battle of its own. Kyle takes charge when it comes to the Russian operatives captured during Two Cups’ operation. The CIA already has extensive biometric information on the prisoners, which gives them a significant advantage. Still, Kyle knows these people have been trained to resist interrogation, meaning getting useful information from them will not be easy.
Instead, the team turns to intimidation. The prisoners are warned that they could end up in Guantanamo Bay and face brutal treatment if they refuse to cooperate. It is a calculated attempt to break through their training and make them reconsider remaining loyal to the people who sent them.
Meanwhile, Joe, Kyle and the others sit down with Secretary Mullins for a larger discussion about what they have uncovered. The FBI chief is clearly frustrated that her department has repeatedly been kept outside the CIA's operations. But the argument over jurisdiction quickly becomes secondary because the investigation has revealed something much more alarming.
The foreign influence is not limited to one organization or one group of people. The CIA has discovered signs of infiltration across American society. Politicians, judges, senators and influential figures have apparently been compromised or influenced by foreign powers. Making all of this information public would create an enormous crisis. If people suddenly learned how deeply these institutions had been penetrated, the damage to public confidence could be impossible to contain.
Joe therefore proposes a different solution. Rather than exposing every compromised person, the government should approach them individually. They would be given two choices: resign from their positions or cooperate with the United States by becoming double agents. It is a risky strategy, but Joe believes turning these people around could be far more useful than simply exposing them and creating widespread panic.
The investigation into Cade and Rooster also reveals just how deeply their operation goes. Both men are American citizens, which means their actions can potentially be treated as treason. During questioning, the team discovers that Rooster's influence over Cade began much earlier than they expected.
Rooster had apparently provided Cade with answers to important tests while he was still in college that seemingly small act helped shape Cade's entire career and allowed the foreign operation to maintain control over him for years. Now Joe needs to know who helped make that connection possible in the first place.
The investigation eventually leads them to Professor Ealy, a software engineer and respected academic at a prestigious college. Ealy appears to have strong communist sympathies, yet he has also benefited enormously from the capitalist system he supposedly opposes. His apparent hypocrisy immediately makes him someone Joe has little patience for.
Joe decides she does not want to leave his detention to someone else. She goes directly to the college while Ealy is giving a lecture and takes him into CIA custody. His arrest could provide another important piece of the puzzle as the team tries to understand how deeply the foreign operation has embedded itself within American institutions.
But the episode ends by reminding us that Joe's own position is becoming increasingly dangerous. Months later, the situation has completely changed. The woman who was once hunting down foreign operatives is now a prisoner herself. Joe is being moved between aircraft under the control of Russian operatives, with her future looking increasingly uncertain.
