House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5 slows the pace of the war but quietly shifts several pieces into place for the battles ahead. Across Westeros, every major house is dealing with its own crisis. Some are searching for allies, others are trying to survive, and a few are already preparing for revenge. While no single conflict reaches its conclusion, nearly every storyline takes a meaningful step forward.
The episode begins with Ser Criston Cole leading his battered forces deeper into the Riverlands. His campaign has become more exhausting than victorious. Although his soldiers manage to win a handful of minor clashes, every mile they march seems to cost them something. The Rivermen refuse to face Cole in open battle, choosing instead to destroy bridges, lay traps, and strike where his army is weakest. Horses are injured, supplies become scarce, and soldiers continue to fall without ever meeting a proper enemy force. Even as his men grow tired and frustrated, Cole refuses to retreat.
Ser Gwayne Hightower eventually confronts Criston after they discover another burned bridge that leaves the army stranded. Gwayne argues that pressing forward serves no purpose anymore and that continuing the march will only lead to more unnecessary deaths. Criston listens but remains unmoved. He admits that he no longer expects to survive the campaign. Rather than returning home in defeat, he would rather meet his end on the battlefield. He speaks of wanting to be remembered as one of the greatest warriors the realm has ever known, determined to write his own ending instead of allowing others to decide it for him.
Far away at Harrenhal, Aemond's fate is finally revealed. Though badly wounded after the previous attack, he is alive thanks to Alys Rivers, who has been nursing him back to health. Alys watches over him constantly, treating his injuries while slowly earning his complete trust. As he recovers, Aemond becomes increasingly dependent on her guidance, relying on her presence as much as her healing abilities.
News spreads that Harrenhal has become a valuable prize, encouraging armed men to travel there hoping to claim the reward placed on Aemond. Throughout the episode, several groups attempt to reach the castle. Each time, Alys finds clever ways to drive them away before they can get close. Eventually, however, one group manages to push deeper into the castle grounds, leaving her cornered. Before they can harm her, Aemond suddenly appears, sword in hand. Despite still recovering, he cuts through the attackers with brutal efficiency, protecting Alys and making it clear that anyone seeking him will have to face both of them.
Inside King's Landing, Alicent Hightower faces another growing problem. Helaena's pregnancy is no longer just a rumor but a reality, and the situation threatens to create even more instability inside the royal family. Grand Maester Orwyle quietly offers Helaena a remedy that would end the pregnancy before anyone else learns about it. Helaena refuses without hesitation. She has no intention of giving up her unborn child, regardless of the political consequences.
Alicent understands the danger far better. In the middle of an already bloody succession crisis, the birth of another royal child—especially a son—could ignite another struggle for power. Fearing what lies ahead, she desperately searches for a way to escape the Red Keep with Helaena before events spiral beyond her control.
Their attempt does not go unnoticed. Mysaria has already sensed that Alicent is hiding something and follows closely enough to catch the pair before they disappear. With no other choice, Alicent reveals Helaena's pregnancy. She also tries to convince Mysaria that Rhaenyra cannot be trusted forever, warning that loyalty means little when power is involved. Mysaria listens carefully but offers no promises, leaving Alicent uncertain whether her words have had any effect.
While searching for another way out, Helaena discovers a hidden doorway concealed within their chambers. Hoping it leads beyond the castle walls, they enter the narrow passage together. Their hope quickly fades when the tunnel ends abruptly in a sealed chamber. Before they can turn back, the hidden entrance closes behind them, trapping both women inside the darkness.
Dragonstone remains filled with tension as Rhaenyra struggles to maintain control over her fractured council. Every report that reaches the table brings another problem. The kingdom's treasury is nearly empty. Ser Criston Cole continues causing chaos in the Riverlands. Vhagar has been spotted burning villages without Aemond clearly seen nearby. Prince Joffrey has safely returned from the Vale, but there is little time to celebrate. Each new development stretches Rhaenyra's attention in another direction, making it increasingly difficult to keep her supporters united.
Daemon focuses on a different mystery after several Gold Cloaks are discovered brutally murdered in Flea Bottom. Their bodies have been displayed in horrifying fashion, suggesting the killings were meant to send a message rather than simply eliminate guards. Daemon personally investigates, believing there is more behind the murders than random violence.
His search uncovers a disturbing truth. The killings were ordered by Ormund Hightower, who has begun openly supporting Prince Daeron's claim to the throne. The assassins were paid using coins bearing Daeron's image, leaving behind undeniable evidence of where their loyalty lies. The murders were carefully staged to brand the dead Gold Cloaks as traitors while quietly advancing Daeron's campaign for the crown.
When Daemon presents his findings, both he and Rhaenyra realize the threat has grown much larger than they previously believed. Their enemies are no longer simply gathering armies outside the capital. They have already begun reshaping King's Landing from within, using fear and calculated violence to weaken those still loyal to Rhaenyra before launching their next move.
Elsewhere, Ormund Hightower continues preparing Daeron for greater responsibilities. During their conversations, he shares stories from Westerosi history, including tales of Princess Meria Martell, whose military leadership earned respect throughout the realm. He encourages Daeron to think beyond swords and dragons, reminding him that strategy often wins wars before battles ever begin. Their lessons continue over games of Cyvasse, where Daeron manages to defeat his mentor, much to Ormund's frustration.
Aegon remains consumed by anger and grief. Still believing his dragon lost and his enemies closing in, he refuses to let go of his desire for revenge against Aemond. Larys Strong spends much of his time accompanying the king, though his patience is clearly wearing thin. During one particularly tense conversation, Larys finally challenges Aegon's reckless behavior, delivering a sharp rebuke that leaves the king with little response.
Meanwhile, Addam and Baela continue searching the skies for Vhagar. Every flight brings uncertainty, knowing that encountering the massive dragon could easily become a battle neither of them is prepared to win. Even so, they continue the hunt, aware that leaving Vhagar unchecked could prove even more dangerous.
By the end of the episode, no major battle has taken place, but the balance of power has shifted once again. Criston Cole marches toward what may become his final campaign, Aemond emerges from hiding stronger than before, Alicent and Helaena find themselves trapped beneath the Red Keep, Daemon uncovers a conspiracy unfolding inside King's Landing, and Daeron's claim to the throne becomes increasingly public. Every corner of Westeros moves one step closer to the larger conflict that now seems impossible to avoid.
