MobLand Season 2 Episode 2, titled “Song 2,” spends much of its runtime building tension through conversations, threats and carefully placed warnings before erupting into a violent final act. Harry finds himself caught between his family and the Harrigans, while Frankie quietly puts his own plan into motion. Meanwhile, Maeve and Seraphina are making moves of their own, setting the stage for a confrontation that leaves several lives hanging in the balance.
One of the episode's most memorable moments takes place between Frankie and Colin Tattersall, the corrupt police officer who has become an unlikely source of information. The two meet in a beauty salon, where Frankie makes the encounter strangely personal by inspecting Colin's hands and feet before taking over the manicure himself. As he clips Colin's nails, he questions him about Harry and what happened to Richie, the criminal who previously found himself on the wrong side of the Harrigans.
Colin answers with a bizarre historical story about François Ravaillac, the Catholic fanatic who assassinated French King Henry IV in 1610. Rather than focusing only on the assassination itself, Colin becomes particularly interested in what happened afterward. Ravaillac was tortured for information and then subjected to an exceptionally brutal execution, with his body eventually torn apart and destroyed.
The gruesome story is Colin's way of explaining what he believes is happening to Harry. He compares Harry to a man being pulled apart by four different horses, suggesting that he is being stretched between competing loyalties and that it will not take much more pressure before everything falls apart. The four forces include Harry's wife Jan and daughter Gina, Conrad and Maeve Harrigan, Kevin Harrigan, and another person whose identity Colin refuses to reveal at first.
The mystery appears to resolve itself when Harry turns up at Bella Harrigan's home. The complicated feelings between Harry and Bella remain impossible to ignore. Bella once again makes it clear that she would leave everything behind and run away with him, even making increasingly direct suggestions about what their relationship could become. Harry, however, refuses to cross that line. His immediate concern is their children, although his concern for Bella suggests there may be more beneath the surface than either of them is willing to acknowledge.
Harry's own marriage is deteriorating at the same time. Jan wants a divorce and blames Harry for the danger surrounding their family. She even tells him that he is poison and argues that he is becoming worse for Gina than Eddie. For Harry, the situation becomes even more complicated because Gina is moving further into the dangerous world around her father. He is being pulled in different directions, with almost everyone close to him demanding something from him.
The tension within the Harrigan family is just as severe. Paul is caught between Conrad and Maeve and quickly learns why it is dangerous to get in the middle of the couple's battles. The disagreements range from petty arguments to much darker decisions. Maeve, for example, orders Paul to call a vet to deal with Conrad's dogs.
Maeve uses the vet's knowledge against him, essentially extracting information about how antifreeze could be used as a poison. Her real target is Seraphina, whom she wants Conrad to meet under the pretense of resolving their differences. Maeve's plan is to get Seraphina close enough to poison her, turning a supposed peace meeting into an assassination attempt.
But Seraphina is hardly sitting around waiting to be attacked. She has been building her own alliances, including conversations with Kat McAllister. Donnie, who appears to be working with Kat, also becomes increasingly involved. He spends time attempting to get close to Jan while simultaneously warning Seraphina not to attend the planned meeting with Conrad and Maeve. Seraphina does not demand an explanation, but it is clear that she understands there may be something dangerous waiting for her.
The episode finally explodes into action when multiple attacks begin happening almost simultaneously. Paul’s cousin is shot in the head, while the two men protecting Gina and Eddie are also killed. Harry arrives at the scene shortly afterward and takes down Frankie’s men, but Gina and Eddie have already escaped.
Elsewhere, another group kidnaps Zosia, adding more to the growing conflict. Frankie then makes his way to Bella and Kevin's home. His men eliminate the security outside before Frankie forces his way inside. Bella hides in the bathroom while Kevin is elsewhere, leaving her trapped with Frankie and his armed crew.
Frankie then makes the situation even more terrifying by calling Conrad directly from the restaurant where Conrad is eating. Conrad becomes suspicious and asks who knows about their location. Frankie says nothing. Instead, he holds the phone in one hand and points his gun at Bella with the other.
At the same time, Seraphina tries calling Conrad's mobile phone. Maeve sees the call but ignores it, and the missed call begins to confirm her suspicions that something is wrong and that Seraphina may somehow be involved. Maeve may have been planning her own attack, but the situation is rapidly becoming much larger than she expected.
The final seconds leave Bella's fate hanging in the balance. Frankie keeps his gun trained on her while Conrad remains on the other end of the call. Then Frankie simply says, “Bang,” before the episode cuts to the credits.
The episode also provides an important update on Conrad's increasingly unpredictable behavior. His doctor explains that changes in his brain chemistry are affecting the areas responsible for impulse control. His memory remains intact and there are no indications of dementia, but his ability to control his impulses is deteriorating. Conrad's response is characteristically threatening: he demands that the doctor destroy the evidence and threatens to kill him if he does not comply.
