The Way Home Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: Elliot Faces His Parents’ Past

Episode 5 of The Way Home continues shifting between different timelines as Kat, Nick, Elliot, Alice, and Del each deal with events connected to the past and present.

Kat and Nick arrive in the 1920s after traveling through the pond, but things quickly go wrong when they end up arrested once again. While locked up, they cross paths with Kane, who eventually helps get them released because he wants assistance dealing with Grayson Goodwin. Kane makes it clear that he does not trust Grayson, especially when Fern’s name comes up during the conversation.

After getting out, Kat continues searching for answers connected to Tessa and Lingermore. Nick takes a different approach and spends time with the Auggie boys, gaining their trust by drinking and talking with them. During the conversation, they unknowingly reveal information about their illegal rum-running business and a hideout called “The Big Fish.” Nick later shares everything he learned with Kat.

The situation becomes dangerous once the Auggie boys realize Nick tricked them into revealing information. Kat and Nick rush back toward the pond to escape and before Nick can jump in, Kat is pushed into the water first, leaving him trapped behind for a moment. Eventually, Nick manages to make it back home safely as well.

Kat later tracks down Fern and finally gets answers about Tessa. Fern reveals that Tessa had visited her multiple times over the years and always asked whether anyone from the pond had come looking for her. The conversation confirms that Tessa knows about the pond and has been connected to these events for much longer than expected.

The episode also hints that Tessa may have connections to the Auggie boys and their illegal alcohol operation around Lingermore. At the same time, several conversations mention a terrible incident in the mines, though nobody fully explains what happened there.

Fern also opens up about her personal losses; she reveals that her brother died in the war and his body was never recovered. She also explains that she lost both of her parents while she was still young. During these conversations, Kat notices similarities between Fern’s life and the struggles faced by the Landry family.

Grayson continues to remain mysterious throughout the episode. Some scenes show him trying to protect Fern, while other moments raise more questions about his involvement in everything happening around Lingermore. It is also revealed that he knows Auntie Coop, which adds another layer to the mystery surrounding the people connected to the pond.

Meanwhile, Elliot and Alice travel to the 1970s together. During the trip, Elliot sees his mother as a young woman for the first time. Instead of the distant figure he barely remembers, he watches a carefree and happy version of her spending time with people around her. One moment shows her dressed as the White Witch while spending time with Evelyn’s son.

During the same trip, Elliot also meets a younger version of his father. His father speaks hopefully about the future without realizing he is talking directly to his own son. Elliot struggles emotionally during the interaction as he watches both of his parents before the tragedies that later changed their lives.

Alice stays with Elliot throughout the journey and supports him while he processes everything he learns about his parents. The 1970s timeline also includes another suspicious moment involving Tessa. She secretly steals Evelyn’s tarot cards, continuing the strange behavior that has surrounded her throughout the season.

Back in the present timeline, Del recovers after her horse accident leaves her concussed. As she rests, her mind repeatedly drifts into old memories involving Colton and a younger Jacob; she begins reliving moments from the past and struggles to separate those memories from reality.

The situation changes once Jacob finally returns home; seeing him in the present forces Del to focus on the family she still has instead of remaining lost inside memories of the past.

Del also deals with her complicated relationships during the episode. Julian tries getting closer to her, but Del gently distances herself from him. At the same time, the episode continues hinting that Sam may know more about the pond than he admits.

Near the end of the episode, Nick reveals that he has officially finalized the purchase of his house after surviving his trip through time. The episode closes while several mysteries surrounding Tessa, Grayson, Sam, and the pond still remain unresolved.
