Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Drop: A Snowfall Saga Season 1, Episode 4, “The Big Push.”
“The Big Push” fills in one of the biggest gaps in Leon and Wanda’s story, revealing why the couple who managed to survive so much together ultimately could not make their marriage work. Their separation was not simply the result of Wanda chasing her ambitions or Leon struggling to accept her choices. The two had suffered a devastating loss that neither of them knew how to overcome.
The episode reveals that Wanda and Leon lost a baby, and the grief slowly created a distance between them. Their relationship had already been shaped by everything they had experienced together, but the loss became the wound they never properly addressed. Isaiah John, who returns as Leon Simmons, previously felt that the couple needed a deeper emotional reason for remaining connected after everything they had been through.
The painful truth surfaces when Wanda approaches Leon for financial help. She needs money to independently release Lamar’s music after his record label pulls “Back to the Hood.” The conversation about money quickly becomes an explosive argument between the former couple. Years of resentment and unresolved emotions come rushing back until Wanda finally confronts the real issue between them: things changed after they lost their baby.
Even with their marriage already broken, Leon cannot completely turn his back on Wanda. He gives her the money she needs, allowing her to move ahead with Lamar’s release. Wanda then takes an unconventional approach that feels strangely familiar to both of them. Instead of waiting for another label to support the song, she treats the music rollout almost like the street operations she and Leon once knew.
Copies of “Back to the Hood” begin moving through neighborhood businesses, barbershops and eventually directly onto the streets. Wanda and her team sell the music from car trunks, pushing the song wherever they can find an audience. The risky strategy begins to pay off as the track starts gaining attention.
When Leon later visits Wanda at the studio, the tension between them has softened. Both acknowledge their part in the conflict and apologize. Wanda shows Leon the money they have already made and tells him that something bigger is happening and that she believes she is right at the center of it. Rather than pulling away, Leon decides to support her again and agrees to help finance the next stage.
The episode also makes it clear that Leon's attachment to Wanda is about more than simply being unable to let go of his first love. He carries a considerable amount of guilt over their shared past. Leon introduced Wanda to a lifestyle that eventually contributed to her struggles with addiction, and he still feels responsible for some of the pain she endured. His desire to help her appears closely tied to that guilt and his need to make things right.
Meanwhile, Lamar finally gets a chance to take his music beyond the neighborhood. Wanda takes him and Artillery into the club scene, but they immediately run into another obstacle when DJ Block refuses to play “Back to the Hood.” Wanda once again refuses to accept a closed door as the end of the road. She finds another way to get the song heard by using the dancers at the club.
The plan works! Lamar and Artillery eventually perform the song for the crowd, giving Lamar his first real taste of performing in that environment. DJ Block eventually changes his mind and plays the track on his radio show. Soon, the song can be heard blasting from cars around the neighborhood, showing just how quickly Wanda's grassroots strategy is beginning to work.
By the end of the episode, Leon and Wanda agree that they should remain friends. However, after everything that has been revealed about their marriage, grief and lingering feelings, their new arrangement is anything but simple. There is still a deep bond between them, even though neither seems ready to return to the relationship they once had.
Leon also attracts attention from an unexpected direction. Dara, Artillery's manager, makes it clear that she is interested in him. She openly says that she wants a gangster in her life and has no intention of waiting around for Leon to make the first move.
For Leon, however, Dara's interest could bring him closer to the very world he has spent years trying to leave behind. By the closing moments of “The Big Push,” his complicated history with Wanda remains unresolved, Lamar's music is gaining momentum, and a new woman has entered his life with very different intentions. The episode leaves all three developments hanging over what comes next.
